Dr Astrid Bonfield

Chief Executive of Malaria No More UK

The VCF was co-created by Dr Bonfield and Professor Andrew Bastawrous. Dr Astrid Bonfield has almost twenty years’ experience of leading high-profile charitable foundations. As Chief Executive of The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, Astrid raised over £100m and successfully implemented eye health programmes in 28 countries throughout the Commonwealth. Under Astrid’s leadership of The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund became the first investor into the Cluster Munition Coalition which, over an eighteen-month period, successfully secured an international treaty banning cluster bombs (The Convention on Cluster Munitions). Prior to this, Astrid developed a policy unit for the Aga Khan Foundation and represented the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in Brussels. She was a Programme Development Specialist for the Bernard van Leer Foundation and started her career as the Director of Inter-Country Peoples’ Aid, a local Zimbabwean NGO working in squatter camps around Harare. She was awarded a CBE in 2014 for her services to charity in the UK and abroad.
