Eleanor Fuller OBE

Former Ambassador and Charity Director

 

Eleanor’s 40 years as a British diplomat, specialising in multilateral diplomacy with a particular focus on international development and human rights, culminated in her appointment as British ambassador at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, a pan European human rights organisation.  She received an OBE in the 2013 New Year Honours for services to human rights and diplomacy.

In 2013 Eleanor became Director of Advocacy at the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust. It was there that she first became aware of issue of poor vision as a serious, widespread but solvable problem.  She concentrated her efforts on securing policy change to support sustainable improvements in vision services for the people of the Commonwealth. She set up and led a coalition of leading eye health organisations that successfully lobbied to make vision part of the Commonwealth agenda.

Eleanor graduated in Modern Languages from Somerville College, Oxford. Besides her work on vision, Eleanor is Co-Chair of The Oxford School of Drama Trust; a volunteer modern languages tutor with The Access Project; and a magistrate on the South East London bench.
